Your First Look At Hugh Jackman And Russell Crowe In 'Les Miserables'

Production on Tom Hooper's film adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh's hit musical Les Miserables is under way at Pinewood Studios in England.  Fans of the show are excited at the idea of this being shot as an epic with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in the leads.  Today we get our first official look at Hugh Jackman early in the film as Jean Valjean.  Take the jump to check it out the picture.

This came via Hugh Jackman's official Twitter account.  Hugh tweeted, "Very excited how the first days of filming are going!! Check out my convict look...but it's changing soon."

More than likely, this picture was released by Universal Pictures because set pics of the characters leaked online earlier this week.  Below you can see another picture of Jackman as Valjean, along with Russell Crowe as Jarvert.  And who would we be if we didn't show those pictures to you?

So far we haven't seen images of Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette) or Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter (the Thernadier's).  I expect those to hit the interwebs the moment they step on set.

One bit of casting in the movie that I am excited about is Colm Wilkinson.  He will be playing the Bishop who sets Valjean on a new path in life.  For those that don't know, Colm played Jean Valjean for many years and is the Valjean that all others will always be compared to.  Take a listen to him at the 10th anniversary concert.

Having Wilkinson play this role in the movie is a great idea.  It's almost a passing of the torch from stage to movie, and it's a nod to theater lovers that they are not forgotten in this adaptation.

The success of this movie will probably determine if a film adaptation of Mackintosh's Miss Saigon will go in to production.

Les Miserables is set to hit theaters this December.

What say you?
