Since Mythbusters premiered in 2003, 769 myths have been tested, 128 vehicles have been destroyed and there has been 744 explosions. It all continues tonight as a new season of The Discovery Channels hit show kicks off with Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage, Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara returning for fun and mayhem. Every episode of Mythbusters has always created a balance of huge spectacle and scientific information. The first new episodes of the season continue that tradition.
First up in the season premiere - 'Bikes and Bazookas' - Jamie and Adam tackle the myth that motorcycles are better for the environment than cars. This means that they need to not only test vehicle against vehicle, but then create a modified motorcycle as well. While they do this, the rest of the team goes after a movie myth. This from the movie Red. In the movie, John Malkovich shoots an RPG that is fired at him. Can an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) that has been fired, be shot in the air AND explode from the bullet hit? This myth leads to some of the best footage from the high speed camera since the time they split a car in half. It's also the first time an RPG was fired on the show.
While Tory, Kari and Grant are off creating explosions; Jamie and Adam are having some fun themselves. During the vehicle tests, Adam is the subject of a hilarious montage showing how he's killing time alone in a car. Some of you may think that testing motorcycle emissions may not be good television, but you would be wrong.
One of the best things about the show is seeing the creative process behind the build. The first two episodes of the season have great sequences for this.
In next weeks episode - 'Newton's Crane Cradle' - Adam and Jamie attempt to simulate a video that creates a huge Newton's Cradle using wrecking balls. I have never seen Jamie giggle this much in one episode. It's almost as much as they say, "balls."

In the same episode the rest of the team goes after another Hollywood myth. If a car is dangling on the edge of a cliff, would a bird landing on the hood tip the car over? The comedy of this episode for me was Grant's scream/shriek during the testing.
You can expect even more myths this season that will have you wondering how they could possibly get any crazier. This includes using duct tape to fix a plane that was mauled by a bear, and seeing if a flying guillotine was real or just Hollywood magic.
Mythbusters is one of my favorite TV shows and I was incredibly glad to see that it returned just as great as ever. Season after season we come back to see myths tackled and things explode. We also keep coming back because of the relationship between everyone on the show. Their honest interactions keep us cheering and laughing along with them. This is what reality TV truly is.
Mythbusters airs Wednesday nights on The Discovery Channel.
