Here at POParitaville, we aren't just about news and snark. We are about pop culture. Quite often that means that we get to take you back in time. Our POPped Tardis could take you some place recent, or it could take you back to your school days.
Recently a song came on and it took me to summer in junior high. (It was Don't Stop The Rock by Freestyle Express.) I could think of lots of songs that take me to the summer. They are our summer jams. We all have them.
Instead of making a list on what my summer jams are, I asked our readers via Twitter and Facebook to share their favorites. What tune immediately takes you back to a certain summer memory. What song do you need to crank when the weather is just right and you're cruising around?
We had some great songs submitted, and as I suspected, a lot of them were the same. Now that the weather is starting to warm up in places, I figured we would get you ready for the summer. Turn up your sound and get ready to for summer.
With over a hundred responses, emails and Facebook messages - based on your favorites - here are the POPped 5 Summer Jams:
*Note* Remember that this is about the songs, not the videos.
1. Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
2. Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
I always thought the ending to that video was weird. Did he then kill her?
3. California Love - Tupac Featuring Dr. Dre
4. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. Panama - Van Halen
I would pretty much agree with that list. I do have to add my personal choice to the list:
Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet
Now I need a cold drink.
There were plenty of other songs that were submitted. These songs didn't necessarily have lots of votes. As a matter of fact, most of these only had one. But when you listen to them, you can hear the soundtrack to peoples lives. Sometimes our soundtrack is deep, and other times it's just about having fun.
I thought these songs were worth also sharing to help you build your new summer play list. Click on them to have a listen.
Paradise City - Guns N' Roses
Lovely Day - Bill Withers
California Gurls - Katy Perry
Beautiful Day - U2
Hot in Herre - Nelly
Summer Love - Justin Timberlake
September - Earth, Wind and Fire
Cruel Summer - Bananarama
On A Sunday Afternoon - Lighter Shade of Brown
Crying, Waiting, Hoping - Marshall Crenshaw (originally by Buddy Holly)
Pictures Of You - The Cure
I could give a much larger list, but I don't think its needed. We all have those certain songs. We share a lot of them, and others are personal. They take us to that special memory in our lives. Some are good, some are bad. What ever it is, the music of our lives plays a part in who we are.
Well, the street lights are coming on. I guess it's time to head back home.
What say you? Do you have a favorite summer jam that isn't here?
