CONFIRMED: Jeff Conaway died today at the age of 60.  He was taken off of life support systems yesterday after being in a medically induced coma for nine days.  According to his manager, Jeff Brock, there are no plans for a memorial service yet.

UPDATE: Reports are flying across the internet that Jeff Conaway is dead. As near as I can tell, this is a bit premature, but an eventual conclusion. Various sources are reporting that his family has made the decision to take him off life support. It is unconfirmed that this has yet happened, as Conaway's wife (Vikki Lizzi) is taking legal steps to prevent that action.

Conaway and Lizzi have had a tumultuous relationship, recently filing dueling restraining orders after their most recent split. Lizzi is the one who reportedly found Conaway unconscious in his home on May 11. Conaway's family had gone to court to block her from coming to the Encino, Ca hospital where he has been in a medically induced coma since a reported drug overdose.

Dr. Drew Pinsky (Celebrity Rehab) had said last week that it may not have been an overdose, and Conaway's condition was actually aggravated by pneumonia and sepsis.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

ORIGINAL POST:

Associated Press is reporting the former "Taxi" star is in a coma after a possible drug overdose. Conaway's manager, Phil Brock, says the 60-year-old actor was found unconscious on May 11. He has been hospitalized in critical condition and his recovery is uncertain.

Conaway originated the role of Danny in the Broadway production of "Grease" and appeared in the film version as Kenickie. He went on to star in "Taxi" as Cab driver/actor Bobby Wheeler for 6 seasons, garnering 2 Golden Globe nominations. In recent years, Conaway has fought a very public battle with Drug and alcohol addiction which included a stint on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew".

His manager described Conaway as a "gentle soul" but one who has been unable to "exorcise his demons."
