It was just a couple of weeks ago that many web sites were proclaiming Ryan Gosling was to play The Lone Ranger in Disney's upcoming feature. Well, that's not going to happen after all. In the search for the next Masked Man, Deadline.com is reporting that Armie Hammer (the Winklevoss Twins in The Social Network) could be the one to shoot silver bullets.
Disney has already signed on Johnny Depp to play the Ranger's Native American sidekick 'Tonto'. Gore Virbinski is directing with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. The mouse house is looking to begin a new franchise with this as well. Though the first rumored name to play The Long Ranger has always stuck in my head - George Clooney. I think the team of Depp and Clooney would have been awesome. Who's with me?! Hellloooo...?
With a young Lone Ranger, we can expect the first movie to be an origin story. Though, I'm not sure how they can improve on the 1981 movie The Legend of The Long Ranger. What am I talking about? This 80's version starred Christopher Lloyd, Jason Robards and Klinton Spilsbury (yes, thee Klinton Spilsbury) as 'The Lone Ranger'. Check out the trailer after the jump:
Then again, maybe it's time.
A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty, "Hi yo Silver!" (cue the 'William Tell Overture')
What say you?
POPped with a silver bullet
