News just broke at The Hollywood Reporters Heat Vision Blog that actor Andy Serkis will direct the Second Unit on The Hobbit. He'll be doing this along with re-prising his role of 'Gollum' in the Peter Jackson two part adaptation of the book.
Serkis told Heat Vision Blog:
“A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic."
Andy did also confirm that The Hobbit was being shot in 3D.
This is a great move on Peter Jackson's part to have Serkis direct. On a movie like this, the Second Unit is usually working on FX shots and action scenes. I could very easily insert a "my precious" joke here, but I shall resist. I do wonder if this will lead to Andy being courted by studios for his own major directing gig after this.
Production on The Hobbit began recently in New Zealand. Part One is currently slated for release in December 2012, and Part Two in December 2013.
