EXTRA, EXTRA...'Newsies' carrying the banner to stage

In the 1992 Disney tried to revive the movie musical with 'Newsies'.  A musical interpretation of the newsboys strike of 1899.  It starred Christian Bale and Robert Duvall.  Newsies was also directed by Kenny Ortega.

The movie did okay at the box office, but wasn't the huge hit that the Mouse House hoped for it to be.  Then the movie hit home video and cable.  From there it was put on heavy rotation in households with young girls and Disney fans.  Many of them can still sing every song from the movie, and wonder if Santa Fe really is where they should go to look for Christian Bale.

With that fond familiarity, Disney announced that 'Newsies' is officially headed to the stage in a production at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey.  The show is set to open on September 25.

Once 'Newsies' hits the stage, I'm sure that many people will realize that this is where it's always belonged.  I'm very surprised that it has taken this long for Disney to turn it in to a stage musical.  With a songs from Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it just makes sense.

With good music, that doesn't mean that it's a good movie.  It's filled with very bad acting and even worse New York tough guy accents.  (Except for the natural one from Max Casella.)  And not every song is a gem.  ("Santa Fe" anyone?)  Alan even won a Razzie for one of them.  "High Times, Hard Times"  Alan informed the Associated Press that this song would not be in the stage show.

What say you?  Are you a 'Newsies' fan?

  1. Finally! Damn Disney shouldve moved that to the stage right after it finished its run in the theater and since the music is in heavy rotation amongst the parade crowd it has a loyal following, at least it was better than highschool musical
