Depp passes on 'OZ'; Franco possible to take over

For a while now we've heard that 'Oz, the Great and Powerful' (the Wizard of Oz prequel that's not Wicked) getting ready to go in to production at Disney.  Robert Downey Jr. was to be man behind the curtain, but he backed out of the project just a couple of weeks ago.  After that happened, word surfaced that Johnny Depp could be the person to step in the role, but since this doesn't have pirates nor is it directed by Tim Burton, that fell through.

Today, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed that James Franco is now being considered to take over the role.  While James is an interesting selection, I think it would be great to see him play 'Oz'.  Franco has been showing audiences for many years that he likes to take roles that are nothing like each other.  From 'Spider-Man' to 'Pineapple Express', a stint on 'General Hospital' to an amazing performance as James Dean in a made for TV movie; James is ready to tackle something new.  Even more attention will be brought to him in a few weeks as he co-hosts the Academy Awards.

'Oz, the Great and Powerful' is to be directed by Sam Raimi with a possible start of production later this year.

What say you?
