UDATED: 2011 Golden Globes - What everyone is really talking about

UPDATE: According to, a member of the HFPA told them that Ricky would not be invited back to next year's ceremony.  They also said, "For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated."  Interesting that they can arrange for someone to not be nominated on something where people vote in secret.  Hmmm...interesting in deed.

Last night was the Golden Globes, where they hand out statues for the best in TV and movies (allegedly).  Last nights big winners were 'GLEE', 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'The Social Network'.  But that is not what everyone is talking about today.  Nope.  The big talk is about host Ricky Gervais.

Ricky promised to come out guns blazing and did he ever.  He went straight for the jugular of Hollywood and didn't hold back.  Personally, I thought he was brilliant.  But apparently some others don't believe so.  Either because they were made fun of, or they're sucking up to the ones that were made fun of. (Looking at you Pop Eater.)  Here is Ricky's opening monologue:

It takes a lot for an audience of jaded stars getting drunk to be shocked.  Make fun of Charlie Sheen = big laughs.  Scientology joke = "WHHHHAAAT?!?!? How dare you!"  I loved every second of it.

It was very right of him to point out why 'The Tourist' was nominated.  (Even though the HFPA was not happy about it.)  There has always been speculation about the HFPA, and in light of recent accusations of payola, there is a lot we'll probably be learning soon.  (Read the Associated Press article here.)

Not everyone was offended by his jokes or felt scandalized.  The Hollywood Reporter asked some of those attending what they thought, and many of them loved it.  Christian Bale said, " Thank God for comedians.  I'm hoping he's going to keep going further."

GLEE's Heather Morris (Brittany) said, "I thought he was hysterical.  He was so dry.  He's funny as hell."

Even Hugh Hefner had fun.  Last night he tweeted -

You see Hollywood, if he can laugh at himself, surely you can too.

What say you?  Were you offended by anything?  Should Ricky come back next year?  Did you catch Jane Fonda's nipple? (tee hee)  Let us know what some of your favorite moments were.
