The Goonies to become a Broadway musical

While much of our attention has been focused on one movie hitting it's 25th Anniversary this year (Back to the Future), there is another that we have discussed on The POPcast as well.  The Goonies turns 25 this year as well.  That's freakn' exciting and really drums up nostalgia (which we'll cover in a later post).  However with the anniversary release of The Goonies on Blu-Ray this coming Tuesday the inevitable talk of a sequel has come up. Richard Donner, along with members of the cast, have talked about them really wanting to do one but it won't happen.

According to Collider.com, Mr. Donner believes that all the ideas they were doing would hurt what they had in the original.  The death of the sequel has turned them into a going a new direction.  Rather than doing a re-make (thank God), they are working on a stage musical of the movie for Broadway.  Director Richard Donner told Collider.com:

But Steven (Spielberg) said something the other day to me that he and Chris (Columbus) were talking about and maybe something — but I don’t think there’d be a sequel. I wouldn’t remake it. If anything it’d be something new and fresh. Hopefully we’re doing this as a musical on Broadway. It took forever to get on Broadway. It was a long, long process but it just got a lot shorter because there’s a great writer/producer (Tim Long) who does musicals on The Simpsonswhich are classic. He just delivered a treatment on ‘Goonies’ as a musical and it’s friggin’ great.”
There you have it gang.  A Goonies musical is on the way.

What say you?  Is this is a good idea?  Will the Truffle Shuffle be the big show stopper we expect and will Mouth still be wearing a Purple Rain t-shirt?
