'Wicked' almost ready for the big screen

Since it first opened on Broadway, fans have wondered when Wicked would become a movie.  As a Studio Guide at Universal Studios I once had the opportunity to ask producer Marc Platt about this and he said it was too soon.  He wanted people to have the chance to see the stage production before a movie was conceived.  (Sidenote: He also mentioned that when he first got the rights to Wicked he wanted to make it as a movie but had trouble adapting the original book into a good feature.  Once the idea of it as a musical was pitched he suddenly saw what it could be.)  Well today Deadline New York is reporting that a movie production could be very close.  According to DeadlineNY:

JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy and Rob Marshall are among the directors who've met or otherwise thrown their hat in the ring. More meetings will take place when the musical's authors come to town in the fall. The film will be made at Universal, which produced the stage musical with Platt.

What say you?  Are you a fan of the stage production?  Are you excited about the thought of a movie?  Who do you picture in the cast?
