Why the New York Public Library is Hip

Facing a budget cut of $37 million, one of (if not THE) best Libraries in the nation had to do something to remind everyone that they are still relevant.

In front of a Reading Room full of studious New Yorkers, and probably a few tourists, the Library let out its demons...three of them to be exact. Now, they aren't as scary as Eleanor Twitty*, but they do call for capture and containment. Enter the Ghostbusters.

Yes, the NYPL knew who to call. Well, sort of. In an effort to bring the public up to speed on the looming budget crisis (and to stave off shuttering 10 branches, cutting service to 4 days per week from 6, and losing valuable programs including job search services), the NYPL called up famed flash mobsters Improv Everywhere . The Library graciously donated the space for the performance, and the results speak for themselves.

If you would like to add your voice, visit http://dontclosethebook.nypl.org/ to write a letter to your local congressperson (if you live in NY, or to Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Mayor Michael Bloomberf if you don't), or to make a donation to the hippest Library in the Nation.
