CONFIRMED: Cirque du Soleil to create show based on the music of Michael Jackson

For some time we have been hearing rumors that there was a Las Vegas show planned for some sort of Michael Jackson tribute (as mentioned here).  Through it all I kept hearing that Cirque du Soleil would be the ones to step up to the plate and put together something.  This became fact today as Cirque du Soleil and Michael Jackson's Estate put out a press release announcing their partnership.

Los Angeles (April 20, 2010) – Two great forces in entertainment have combined with the announcement of an unprecedented arrangement between The Estate of Michael Jackson, represented by Executors John Branca and John McLain, and Cirque du Soleil for the creation, development, production and promotion of Michael Jackson projects, featuring touring and permanent shows, based on the music and songs of Michael Jackson. Special lifestyle projects, including a nightclub to open with the Las Vegas production, will also be developed.

The first of these projects will be an arena-touring show in which fans will experience the excitement of a Michael Jackson concert, expected to debut in late Fall 2011. That arena show is anticipated to enjoy an extended run in Las Vegas in conjunction with longtime Cirque du Soleil partner MGM MIRAGE. The Las Vegas permanent show, also in partnership with MGM MIRAGE, is expected to open in late 2012. MGM MIRAGE will announce the location and plans for the permanent theatrical venue at a later date.
So it looks like we'll essentially be getting two different shows.  There will be the touring arena show and the permanent Vegas production.  This really does seem like the perfect match.  While there are no details yet about either of the shows I am hoping that elements of the This Is It concert will be used.  The other item not mentioned is which of MGM Mirage's properties will be the home of the show.  Perhaps this will finally give them an out for the Criss Angel "show".

Take the jump to read the full press release.

What say you?  Will you be taking in the arena tour or heading to Sin City to see the show?

  1. I enjoy Criss Angel. He's interesting to watch. I won't go to the new Cirque show- in Las Vegas or the touring show. I was never into Michael Jackson.
The Elvis Cirque- now THAT should be a good one!

  2. Criss Angel? I got dragged to his show because the hotel practically begged us to take the tickets. It was so awful. I was shocked that Cirque's name was on it. Now this show I will definitely pay to see.
