Still Looking For Something To Do Tonight?

Someone told me yesterday that their plan for tonight was to watch the midnight countdown watching Dick Clarke's show. This of course led to me telling my story about how one year myself and our own SkipTink actually were dancers on New Year's Rockin' Eve. (I had huge chunks of glitter and confetti in my hair for days after shooting the midnight countdown many times.) She then told me that she might go out if she can find something to do. But New Year's parties are only fun for her once in a blue moon. Well kiddies, for those of you that insist on saying, "Once in a blue moon," today is your day. Not only for the blue moon (which IS happening tonight) but for something fun.

If you are on the Central Coast, or near it, get over to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Tonight there will be a huge New Year's Eve party taking place amongst the fishies. Entertainment will be happening through out the Aquarium (2 live bands and a DJ) and a VIP ticket available that also gets you into three VIP lounges created just for the evening. There is a complimentary champagne toast at midnight with a souvenir champagne flute for you to take home. Think about, partying inside one of the most beautiful Aquarium's in the world in a way you never thought imagined. Pretty sweet, huh?

In the interest of fairness I should let you know that the reason I know all the details is because I helped put it together. Yup. So tonight I will in attendance, as will SkipTink, and we hope that you will join us. Tickets are still available online today until 3:00 PM and will be available at the door tonight for a limited time. (Take the jump to go to the event web page.) Now go and find something to wear and get ready to ring in 2010 amongst friends and fish.

Biggest POP Culture Moments of the Decade

2009 is almost over and everyone has given their list of the best movies, TV shows, songs, hamburgers, car chases, melt downs and bar mitzvah's...so why should we be any different. But tomorrow also brings an end to a decade that began with us wondering if every computer in the world would bring about the end of the world; to us giving them that power. But what were the biggest POP culture moments of the past decade? I'm sure you have your opinions, but here are our choices:

(Note: These are POP culture moments, not necessarily favorites. As always, please...no wagering.)

Reality Television
From 'Survivor' to 'American Idol' to the 'Amazing Race', people have given these shows the power to take over network programming. Sadly this has also given TV channels a reason to create 'The Hills' and 'The Bachelor'.

iPod
Portable music had been around for decades, but this little item changed the game, and the music industry. It was so innovative that it would also lead to the design of an item that would also change the phone industry.

Harry Potter
The story of this young boy changed the book publishing world. With each new book's release the crowds would grow larger. For the first time in a long time the books were so popular that they started to release them at midnight. And the movies would prove to be just as popular.

XBOX Live/Guitar Hero
As video games and gaming systems became more sophisticated, along came an online experience to pull it all together. XBOX Live allowed people to play with and against one another around the world. Then came a game that did something that most of us only dreamed of, it turned us into rock stars. 'Guitar Hero' gave us a miniature electric guitar and allowed us to rock out and think that we could actually play the guitar.

The Rise of Social Media
Email changed how we communicated in our personal lives and in business. Then web sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter changed how we communicated daily with everybody. But MySpace also showed how quickly a popular site can go from media darling to internet joke.

Netflix
Pick the movies, have them sent to your home (or stream online) without going out? Fantastic!

YouTube
Believe it or not, there was a time when someone would say, "Did you see that guy do that thing at that place that one time?", but you would have no place to look for it. Your only hope was that somehow someone would make the video small enough to email over a dial-up connection. Now we have a place where we can see all the laughing babies and smacks to the crotch we want. It's the simple things, really.

The Death of Michael Jackson and the Death of Traditional Journalism
On June 25th, the entertainment industry lost the biggest icon since Elvis. Fans from around the world (myself included) mourned his passing and chose to remember how he impacted the music and entertainment industry. It was also when this happened that we saw first hand how out of touch much of the news industry is. While several sites (ours included) were already posting that Michael was in the hospital, we also posted that TMZ.com was reporting he had passed away. But none of the major news networks would report this information. For close to an hour TMZ was ahead of the game with the report, but it wasn't until the LA Times posted on their web site that he indeed was dead that CNN reported it with LA Times as the source. But the word was already out on Twitter and other social networks. So much so that most of those sites crashed from heavy usage. They were late to the game and the news networks have now turned into more of punchline than news source. In a world that was already killing off newspapers due to lack of readers, the TV news networks showed that they may not be far behind if they can't adapt to a world where everyone is now the reporter.

What say you? What were the biggest POP culture moments of the decade?

POParitaville Favorite Christmas Episodes: 'The Star Wars Holiday Special'

Here it is kids, POParitaville's top holiday TV episode ever. 'The Star Wars Holiday Special'. In 1978, before Star Wars was released on home video and way before high speed internet..this holiday special was the only way to see the characters from Star Wars on television. (Unless they were hosting The Muppet Show.) In this holiday special Han Solo is trying to get Chewbacca back to his home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day. Too bad the Empire is trying to stop them, because it delays them from arriving right away and we then have to spend two hours with Chewie's family. Here we meet his wife Malla, his son Lumpy and his dad Itchy. (No joke)

Much of the show is also cut together with footage from Star Wars to try and up the production level. But outside of the amusing factor, don't expect this to show to be....uhhh....what's the word.....uhmmmm......good. This was so awful that it was never shown again after it originally aired in 1978. Lucas never did (and never will) release it on video. He has said in several brief interviews that he regrets allowing the network permission to make it but learned from the experience. Really the only good thing that came out of it is that during an animated sequence we are introduced to Boba Fett for the first time.

I could go on and on talking about this special, but perhaps you should experience it for yourself. (Yes, even the 1978 commercials are here for you to enjoy.) So why pick this show as the top when there are so many Christmas specials and episodes that are good? It's because this shows how horribly wrong pop culture can go. It can take something that is so good and make it so very, very bad. But this show is so bad, it almost becomes good. I said almost. It's also something that every Star Wars fan should experience just once. If only just as a warning, and also to see all the Wookies wearing Snuggies at the end while Carrie Fisher sings the Life Day song to the main Star Wars theme. Yup. Happy Life Day indeed.

UPDATE: Apparently we're getting a lot of traffic to POParitaville to see the video. If it doesn't load here, take the jump here to see it.

POParitaville Favorite Christmas Episodes: 'Friends - The One With the Holiday Armadillo'

As we move forward in sharing some of our favorite Christmas episodes, today we bring you another great one. 'Friends - The One with the Holiday Armadillo'. I usually hated whenever Ross' kid Ben was in an episode (same reason I hated 'Big Daddy'...that kid is just annoying). But after getting past my moments of wanting to smack him, I realized that this is one of the funniest episodes they did during the shows run. As Ross tries to teach his kid about Hanukkah as Santa's representative for the southern states, "...and Mexico!", he's joined by Santa and Superman as well. For those of you crying for a Spoiler Alert, this episode premiered 11 years ago, so get over it.

A Long Time Ago, During The Holiday's Far, Far Away...

Continuing our current tradition of pop culture during the holidays, we have a treat for your from the great people at LucasFilm. Every year they have exclusive holiday cards that are sent out to their employees and clients. These can't be bought at your local Hallmark or Target. These are exclusive items for these people. Luckily they are now sharing with us some of their favorites. Below are some more examples. Take the jump over the official Star Wars site to see larger versions and even more.

Enjoy!

POParitaville Favorite Christmas Episodes: 'Seinfeld - The Strike' (aka: Festivus)

Leave it to 'Seinfeld' to create a holiday of their own. But it was all really created by one of the writers dad's long before the show was a hit. There is a great documentary about this that can be found on the shows DVD. In an episode called 'The Strike' we learned of 'Festivus'. There were many a holiday where our own Rabbi Marauder and myself would be in our apartment and joke about when to have the "airing of the grievances." Believe it or not, there are now quite a few people that celebrate Festivus. Even today, CNN did a story about those that do celebrate it. While some have added their own traditions to it, like exchanging gifts (uhh..isn't that, and the faith thing the reason for Festivus?) it really comes down to a few things. First, you'll need to get your Festivus pole. Nothing special, it just has to be aluminum. Then when you gather together you have the airing of grievances. This leads up to the demonstration of feats of strength. While some finished Hanukkah, others get ready for Christmas and Kwanzaa there is "Festivus for the rest of us."

POParitaville Favorite Christmas Episodes: 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'

A couple of weeks ago we brought to you the pinnacle of Christmas specials: 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'. And in that piece we mentioned other favorite holiday episodes of TV shows. Well, perhaps there were some that you didn't see. Or perhaps there are some that you want to see over again. So over the next few days we'll bring to you some of the best Christmas TV episodes (of those that we are able to imbed on our site). We start this off with a show that I feel left the air way too early, 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'. There will be more later on about why this show should have stayed on the air, but in the meantime this is the first pick. Why? Well much of it comes down to what leads to one of the best and most tear-jerking jazz numbers ever to be on television. If you cannot get through O' Holy Night at the end of the episode without tearing up a little or having your heart flutter a little, well then you are something that would be funny to name if I could think of something more humorous than the devil or Dick Cheney.

What about you? Leave a comment with some of your favorite Christmas episodes and maybe yours will be included.

POPped Review: 'Avatar'

**Spoilery Alert?**

Leading up to this weekend there has been much talk, much hype and much speculation about 'Avatar'. And in my mind.. it was all true. 'Avatar' is one of the
best movie experiences I've had in a long time. Over the weekend much debate will be had. There will be those that love it, those that hate it, and those that need to see it again to figure out what they just saw. Let me start off by saying that when you see it, you NEED to see it in IMAX 3D. Once the 3D immerses you in the world of Pandora, there is no other way to experience it. As the main character of Sully learns about this world, we learn along with him. We experience it for the first time with him. And we truly are experiencing it for the first time. But we'll get into the look and technology of the movie in a bit. Let's explore the story a little shall we?

**I'm not going to warn you again..**

We meet Sully right off the bat as he is convinced to take his twin brothers place in an experiment on the planet of Pandora. As we land on the planet we find out that Sully was a Marine who had been injured and is now paralyzed from the waist down. After meeting others that arrived with him we get right into the heart of the matter. They are there to mine a rock that's worth a lot of money and the company running the show makes it known that they don't care about anything more than that. However they are also a part of a science project where humans are put in a very small pod and are given mental control of an alien that has been created just for them. It's their avatar. (Get it? It's not just a clever name.) They are 10 foot tall creatures known as the Na'vi. By occupying this body, Sully can now walk again, and do much more. While the head scientist, played by Sigourney Weaver, wants him to truly learn about the Na'vi..almost like a missionary; the military and corporate heads want him to gain their trust and provide information about their way of life and how they can defeat them. While it comes as no surprise, Sully gains a respect and bond with them that of course means he is conflicted with doing his mission. While everyone in charge is using him for their own gain, he is also using them to gain a new life.

The story themes are nothing new here. We've all seen a movie where it comes down to one's own self-discovery to stand up for what's right. But that isn't an issue here. While the themes are the same, it is told in a way that draws you in. By being in a world that we've never seen before we are also on a journey of self-discovery. As Sully runs and leaps through Pandora in his Avatar body, there is a child-like sense of wonder as he is amazed at his surroundings. I felt the same thing. I've already heard some critics think that because most people keep talking about the look of the movie that must mean that it's a bad movie. This isn't it at all. The look of this planet is central to the plot. In order for the story to succeed we need to also be upset about the planets destruction, and it works. Pandora is an amazing creation. It is one of the most original creations since Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings films. But it goes beyond that in some aspects because Peter Jackson had Tolkien's works to reference, but this is a world that had to be made from the ground up.

Again, some of you may think that talking up the look rather than the story is a way of saying the movie sucks. Au contraire, mon frère. They need each other to exist. The characters of the Na'vi and some of the best CG work that has been done since Gollum in Lord of the Rings. Which makes sense, because Peter Jackson's effects studio (WETA) is responsible for this. From looking at the subtle expressions on their faces, to the exhaust pouring out of the armed walkers the Marines use; the attention to detail is astounding. But it goes beyond that in this movie. These details are even more vivid because of the 3D element. And the 3D technology used for this movie is the best feature film 3D...ever. I say this because it wasn't used as a gimmick. It was used as a tool for not only telling the story, but immersing you in it. In what are "simple" scenes of Sully talking to the camera while making his daily video journals, it feels like you are seeing a hologram from the future. And when he is in the world of Pandora, you want to walk around explore even more. It's a world of beauty (where the ground lights up at night like the 'Billie Jean' video) and danger (some big ass animals with an attitude). And with the Na'vi there are shades of how Cameron has been influenced by Native American, Aborigine and African culture. It translates by not only their love and connection with the planet, but through their traditions and even the music score. James Horner helps bring the universe to life with his music. But, I do have to honestly say that song in the end credit felt totally out of place. But for that really being my only complaint, that's not a whole lot to keep me away from seeing it again. And see it again I am will definitely do.

I cannot recommend enough that you see Avatar, and see it soon. But you have to see it in IMAX 3D and sit in the center of the theater. Seeing it any other way is just a rip off for your senses.

UPDATED: 'Captain EO' returns to Disneyland February 2010!

As we have been speaking about for months, today it became official. 'Captain EO' will return to Disneyland for a limited engagement in February 2010. Here is what the official release states:

Twenty-three years ago, at the height of his phenomenal entertainment career, Michael Jackson joined forces with Disney to create “Captain EO,” a groundbreaking 17-minute 3D film experience.

We are excited to confirm that the classic musical spectacular that thrilled Disneyland park guests from 1986 – 1997, will return for an exclusive, limited engagement at Disneyland park beginning in February 2010!

The attraction’s return to Tomorrowland will provide new audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3D production for the very first time, as well as a nostalgic look back for longtime fans wanting to see “The King of Pop” in a rare performance created for the big-screen, just one more time.

Honey I Shrunk The Audience” will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the Captain’s return.

Check back here for more details on “Captain EO.”

Is anyone else excited about this, or is it just me?

Who has the map?!?!

UPDATE:

A very reliable source has told POParitaville that 'Captain EO' will be opening around February 12th (Valentine's weekend). This is confirmed by the employee Main Gate Passes being blocked out during this time. These are passes that Cast Member's receive from the company to bring their guests into the Disney parks. Usually the block outs are for major holidays, or times when they expect a high guest turnout. These can be updated at virtually any time. And they are now blocked this weekend. Expect an official announcement from the Mouse soon.

RIP - Roy Disney E. Disney

Coming to the end of a year where many of our biggest icons passed away, another has died today as well. Roy E. Disney Jr., nephew to Walt, died at the age of 79. Word got to me through former, and current, Disney Cast Members. It has also been confirmed through various news agencies. Roy was truly the last of the legacy of both his dad Roy (who was the finance brains) and his uncle Walt (the man whose creations still have the power to rule the world). For many years Roy was there to remind people why Disney (as a company) was created and to point them in the direction that Walt would have wanted. Sadly much of this came to an end when Roy felt that Michael Eisner was steering the company into a bad direction. He successfully (?) led a stockholders revolt against Eisner (who at one time wanted me fired from the company....but that's a whooooole other story) in where the Board of Directors had Eisner step down from the head ranks of Disney. Since then we have seen Disney once again emerge as an entertainment force that no one can compete with. From the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies, to the HSM/Jonas/Hannah Montana craze and more Disney parks being built... Roy was happy to see that people were finally being reminded that, "It all started with a mouse."

UPDATE:
We were just provided with this official announcement to Disney Cast Members from Bob Iger -

A Message from Bob: Roy E. Disney Passes
Dear Cast Members,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of our friend and colleague Roy E. Disney. After a courageous year-long fight with stomach cancer, he passed away peacefully this morning at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, surrounded by his loving family.

Roy played an important role in our lives here at Disney, and in the success of our Company over many years. Along the way, he touched many of us in a personal way. During his 56-year association with the Company, his true passion and focus was preserving and building upon the amazing legacy of Disney animation that was started by his father and uncle. His commitment to the art of animation was unparalleled and will always remain his personal legacy and one of the greatest contributions to Disney's past, present and future.

Roy not only helped to keep the legacy alive, but he also embraced new technologies, and gave the filmmakers the tools they needed to tell their stories in new and exciting ways. He encouraged talent, and loved working with the creative community. And they loved working with him.

Roy was a Disney Legend in every sense of the word, and his contributions to this great Company have been profound and will always be remembered. For the next week we will be flying the Disney flag at half mast here at the Studio and at our parks, and I know you join me in sending thoughts and prayers to Roy's wife, Leslie, his four children, and his 16 grandchildren. For those who wish to pay their respects, the family has requested that donations be made in Roy's name to the California International Sailing Association (CISA) to benefit youth sailing.
