POParitaville Favorite Christmas Episodes: 'The Star Wars Holiday Special'

Here it is kids, POParitaville's top holiday TV episode ever. 'The Star Wars Holiday Special'. In 1978, before Star Wars was released on home video and way before high speed internet..this holiday special was the only way to see the characters from Star Wars on television. (Unless they were hosting The Muppet Show.) In this holiday special Han Solo is trying to get Chewbacca back to his home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day. Too bad the Empire is trying to stop them, because it delays them from arriving right away and we then have to spend two hours with Chewie's family. Here we meet his wife Malla, his son Lumpy and his dad Itchy. (No joke)

Much of the show is also cut together with footage from Star Wars to try and up the production level. But outside of the amusing factor, don't expect this to show to be....uhhh....what's the word.....uhmmmm......good. This was so awful that it was never shown again after it originally aired in 1978. Lucas never did (and never will) release it on video. He has said in several brief interviews that he regrets allowing the network permission to make it but learned from the experience. Really the only good thing that came out of it is that during an animated sequence we are introduced to Boba Fett for the first time.

I could go on and on talking about this special, but perhaps you should experience it for yourself. (Yes, even the 1978 commercials are here for you to enjoy.) So why pick this show as the top when there are so many Christmas specials and episodes that are good? It's because this shows how horribly wrong pop culture can go. It can take something that is so good and make it so very, very bad. But this show is so bad, it almost becomes good. I said almost. It's also something that every Star Wars fan should experience just once. If only just as a warning, and also to see all the Wookies wearing Snuggies at the end while Carrie Fisher sings the Life Day song to the main Star Wars theme. Yup. Happy Life Day indeed.

UPDATE: Apparently we're getting a lot of traffic to POParitaville to see the video. If it doesn't load here, take the jump here to see it.

  1. We're getting a lot of traffic suddenly. Just posted a link to it. It should work fine from there. Sorry about that.
