'District 9' Tops The Weekend

The Neil Blomkamp Directed and Peter Jackson Produced 'District 9' came in at #1 this weekend with an estimated $37 million. This is a fantastic achievement for a movie that no one even paid attention to when it was being made. Ever since the first trailer premiered a few months back, suddenly people wondered about it. And it began gaining even more momentum last month at Comic-Con with an advance screening and a packed panel, this was on it's way to becoming a hit. Those that weren't able to attend the screening were able to see a shorter version of the movie. 'District 9' was originally made by Neil Blomkamp as a short film called 'Alive in Joberg'. You can watch the 6 minute film at the end of this article.

But sometimes fanboy buzz is scorned by box office "experts" as not real audiences nor represent what's considered the general public. And all of those people are now praising the film and it's makers while Universal kicks themselves for not holding on to them. You see, Neil and Peter were on their way to make a movie for Universal based on the popular 'HALO' video games. As Peter confessed at Comic-Con, Hollywood/studio politics killed the movie with no chance of it ever getting made. Universal has since lost the rights to the game, Neil and Peter now have a financial and critical hit, AND Speilberg has spoken about wanting to try to make a 'HALO' movie; which would take it to DreamWorks and their new distribution partner..Disney. Good move Universal. I'm sure that 'Monopoly - The Movie' (no joke) will be just as good.
