'Spaced' - The Show Every Pop Culture Fan Needs to See

Several years ago I was told about a tv show that Simon Pegg was in that I just had to see called 'Spaced'. I was a big fan of 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' so I was pretty eager to check it out. I have to say though that usually when people tell me I have to see something because they know I'll love it, I end up disappointed. (case in point 'Napolean Dynamite'. Ugh!) I finally had the chance last year to watch the series and I have to say...this is one of the best sitcoms I have ever watched. Of course it was a BBC show because it's way to clever to be an American sitcom. McG and FOX have claimed that they are going to make an American version of it. Though they claim that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are participating this is far from the case. You can read Simon's comment about it here. While watching episodes you can see early incarnations of what would become 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'.

'Spaced' is a typical setup for a sitcom, but it manages to use pop culture and the world of fanboys at it's core to set itself apart. It's a tool for the characters, but for many of us it is a pretty accurate example on how we are with our friends. The last show, in my opinion, that showed that bond was 'Seinfeld'. Don't just take my word for it, relax and watch the pilot for the 'Spaced'. After that is one of my favorite episodes from the 2nd and final season called 'Gone'. Even though you can stream the show online for free, do yourself a favor and get it on DVD as well.

  1. I just recently discovered this show, as well, through Netflix. Ever since seeing "Shaun" and "Fuzz", I have been meaning to check out this series. It's every bit as good as you said it was and clearly the early begininngs of these two movies.
