Today the Motion Picture Academy announced that for next years Academy Awards, the Best Picture category will not feature 5 nominees. Nope. It will now feature 10. You read that right. 10 Best Picture nominees. Sid Ganis, current Academy President, told Variety:
"I can't wait to see what that list of 10 looks like when the nominees are announced in February."
What say you? Do you think that this will make a difference in viewership? Will this have a positive or negative impact? They believe that this opens the door for films like The Dark Knight to get nominated. But a box office hit doesn't really equal a good movie. Can we now expect a Madea movie to be nominated along with the next great epic, or tear jerker? If they are looking to start including the box office hits, why not finally create a Best Stunt Coordinator category? For people that put their lives on the line to get the shot, perhaps the chance of getting a trophy is a decent payoff.
