'Star Trek' Sets Phasers To '#1'!

In what came as no surprise, 'Star Trek' came in at #1 this weekend.  Thanks to an early opening and fantastic word of mouth from early screenings and great reviews, the crew of the new Enterprise beamed in $72.5 million.  If anyone was on Twitter of Facebook this weekend they would have seen that this movie is what almost everyone was talking about.  Much like last year at this time when all anyone could speak of was Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, all people could talk about was the entire cast of Star Trek.  Not only that, but much of the weekend audience was female and quick to post tweets and headlines talking about the dreamy Spock and Kirk.  Now the big test comes in with how long can it sustain this momentum.  This weekend it goes up against the great teamwork of Tom Hanks with Director Ron Howard with 'Angels and Demons'.  This is the first month in a long time where every weekend has a movie opening with a large fan base.  May 2009 is a movie lovers dream.  Let's see what June has in store.

Weekend Top Ten:

1. "Star Trek," $72.5 million.

2. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $27 million.

3. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," $10.45 million.

4. "Obsessed," $6.6 million.

5. "17 Again," $4.4 million.

6. "Next Day Air," $4 million.

7. "The Soloist," $3.6 million.

8. "Monsters vs. Aliens," $3.4 million.

9. "Earth," $2.5 million.

10. "Hannah Montana: The Movie," $2.4 million.
