Last week's number one movie, 'Watchmen', came in at number two this week with a huge drop off. While #2 at the box office is usually a good thing, having that after dropping of 67% is not so bueno. Most studios expected a large drop off this week after the opening weekend hype, but this is a little larger than what was expected. Luckily the movie is by no means a dud and is doing very well over seas, but it is of course under what many hoped would be the first break out smash of 2009. Of course I would hate to be any superhero movie opening in the shadow of The Dark Knight. Audience expectations are high, and familiarity is a large part of that.
Speaking of familiarity, audiences decided to give a shot to a movie "re-imagining" (because the word re-make is a four letter word at studios) of one that I loved as a kid...'Race To Witch Mountain'. 'Race' came in at number one with appoximately $25 million. People love them some Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and aliens that are kids. Here is the rest of this weekends top ten
1. "Race to Witch Mountain," $25 million.
2. "Watchmen," $18.1 million.
3. "The Last House on the Left," $14.7 million.
4. "Taken," $6.7 million.
5. "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," $5.1 million.
6. "Slumdog Millionaire," $5 million.
7. "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," $3.1 million.
8. "He's Just Not That Into You," $2.9 million.
9. "Coraline," $3.3 million.
10. "Miss March," $2.4 million.
